Our Stories 15 April 2020

Humans of Bis – Cassandra

She leads a function that plays a significant role in looking after our people and our business in the event of an injury and like so many people in our business, she thrives on the diversity of it.

As Group Manager – Workers Compensation & Rehabilitation, Cassandra and her team provides compassionate, commercially responsible and legally guided support. The end game is ensuring both our people and the business are appropriately supported and protected should an injury occur, and the best outcome is achieved for all parties.

‘I like the opportunity to be involved in helping people. When a person is injured at work, it is a very difficult time for them and their families. It’s such a great feeling to see that person come out the other side and know you played a small part in that.’

To do this she draws on areas such as as injury management, rehabilitation, claims, premium management and self insurance licence management. Right now [April] her focus in on the critical task of the annual state based Workers Compensation policy renewals and liability valuations. It is these policies and processes that protect and support our people and the business.

Cass joined Bis back in 2005 when we were still four separate businesses (Chep, Cleanaway, Recall and Brambles Industrial Services) providing Industrial Relations support.

She still recounts her first day, when she was bundled in a cab and sent down to a Tribunal hearing (long before online lodgements)! She loved the pace and diversity of the work and knew Bis was the place for her from that very first day. Since then her journey has included several roles (and relocations!) in IR and HR, but the opportunity in Workers Compensation came at the perfect time and she again, jumped in feet first.

‘From the first time I saw the job ad [in 2005], I was attracted to Bis because it was so diverse and I found that interesting and intriguing.

‘It’s been amazing to watch how the company has transformed and reinvented itself. I’m excited for what the future holds as we expand overseas and through our focus on innovation.

Cass also plays a large role at an industry level as well, which has seen her become more involved in self-insurance jurisdiction. She’s currently [2020] Vice President of the Safety Rehabilitation and Compensation Licensees Association (SRCLA). This is her second year in this position and fifth as part of the SRCLA Executive team.

‘Bis has provided me with the opportunity to grow my career, further my education and gain an understanding of a variety of industries. I’ve explored parts of the country I had only read about, met many people (in and outside the industry), be coached by some great leaders, step up to lead my own team and interact with colleagues who challenge me every day.

‘What more can you ask for?’
