Demand for drivers is outstripping supply and that could pose its own supply delays

The biggest issue facing Australia’s trucking and logistics industries is a critical shortage of labour. For Bis CEO Brad Rogers, key drivers of the problem are Covid absenteeism and the after-effects of closed borders, but also a structural issue as a generation of truck drivers is heading for retirement.

Trucking companies, regulators and governments alike share a concern that skills shortages in the transport industry will have a long-term impact on the nation’s supply-chain productivity and safety.

One of the solutions under way, supported by government and industry alike, is a new apprenticeship program for truck driving which, ideally, would also work to improve workers’ technological capabilities.
