Bis celebrates 60 years in Whyalla

The Whyalla Bis team, together with Bis senior leaders were recently joined by current and former employees, community leaders and customers to kick off celebrations for the company’s 60th year of operation in Whyalla, South Australia.

The festive evening was held at the Bis sponsored Middleback Arts Centre on 12 November and featured some of the highlights of the last 60 years via a major timeline wall, video presentations, a pictorial slideshow and many stories shared amongst guests.

Since 1959, the company has continuously provided logistics and materials handling support for the GFG Alliance and its predecessor companies at the iconic Whyalla Steelworks, as well as delivering critical infrastructure projects, including the construction of roads, pipelines and jetties in Whyalla.

Bis Chief Executive Brad Rogers said the celebrations were an opportunity to honour the special relationship Bis, and its 240 employees, has with GFG Alliance, the local procurement network and the town itself.

“Bis is Whyalla proud. Our people are part of the community. They live here, shop here, play sport here, our employee’s children are born here and go to school here. Multiple generations of local families have worked for us and that proud tradition continues
today,” Mr Rogers said.

“Over the last 60 years we have also demonstrated an ability to listen to our customers, understand their business and deliver tailored, effective and efficient supply chain solutions.”

Mr Rogers highlighted the recent award of a contract by GFG Alliance making Bis the single materials handling contractor for the company’s Whyalla steel making operations.

The new contract sees Bis deliver a range of site services to the Whyalla site including steel services, scrap processing and handling, slag processing and handling and bulk materials handling. Eighty new team members joined the business to deliver the expanded scope of works.
