Being one the very first employees in our Indonesian operation in 2014 is something Russel is proud of; and so he should be. As our Operations Director of Indonesia, he’s played a key role in building our regional capabilities since those early days.
One of his key responsibilities is overseeing our Load and Haul contract for PT Gunung Bara Utama (GBU), which recently celebrated its second anniversary of operating; achieved LTI (Lost Time Injury) free. The contract employs a 220-strong Bis team, many of whom, like Russel, reside locally in the surrounding communities.
Like many at Bis, his role involves wearing many hats. From keeping our employees and suppliers safe and providing managerial on-site contract support, to delivering on the contract commitments and looking for new business opportunities, no day is the same.
So what does a ‘typical’ day for Russel look like? ‘I always start with checking in with the site team regarding previous 24 hours’ performance and working through any challenges we may have. After that, it could be a mix of liaising with suppliers, maintaining the close relationship we have with our customer, GBU, working remotely with the Bis team back in Australia or looking into new regional opportunities.’
Russel is a bit of a global citizen having relocated overseas at 21 and since then has lived in Sweden, Singapore, China, Malaysia and Japan; finally putting down roots in Balikpapan, Indonesia in 2007. Now with a wife and 3 children, Indonesia is very much, home.
Joining Bis on the cusp of our first Indonesian project at the Tabang mine, Russel successfully transferred his heavy earthmoving equipment background into haulage and resource logistics.
When asked about Russel, Andrew Prout, President Director – Indonesia, said, ‘Russel has a real passion for Bis, our employees and the local community he works in and it’s great to work with Russel every day at Bis.’
