Humans of Bis – Rafael

Rafael’s role requires him to drive operational excellence and profitability of a diverse part of our Underground business – and he loves doing it.

As Business Group Manager – Maintenance Services he’s responsible for the four east coast based Bis and UGM Underground Services workshops (3x in NSW, 1x in QLD), as well as the Underground Field Service team (mobile technicians).

His internal and external stakeholders are wide and varied which means no day is the same. Splitting his week between the workshops (except for QLD currently, which he uses Microsoft Teams to connect with) allows him to be readily accessible to the workshop teams, and support them on operational matters in a hands on way.

“Each time I’m on site I try to complete a ‘LIFE interaction’ (Leadership In Field Engagement) with a member of the team. I do it for two reasons; it upskills our employees in Zero Harm safety leadership, and also provides opportunities to speak with our employees to understand how things are and chat about anything they wish to discuss.’

Currently Rafael is also helping to develop a range of new business opportunities. ‘There are a lot of great possibilities in the works to grow the business but we’re putting equal energy into improving the business to keep people safe and operate in the most sustainable way.’

When Rafael joined Bis in January 2020, he also took on two key property projects which have seen him oversee the development of new workshops – one at Morisset, Lake Macquarie NSW for UGM and a new Mackay, QLD workshop in Paget for Bis and UGM. Both are considerable undertakings in their own right, and he wouldn’t have it any other way.

“What has been great, partially driven by the recent travel restrictions, was the use of online meetings for our weekly project meetings. It promoted integration across the Underground business, and other parts of the business, each week. It’s actually brought us together in a way that may not have been achieved. As such, the project has thrived.”

Approaching his first anniversary with Bis, he reflects on the first 12months, “Working at Bis is a great challenge. I enjoy the opportunity to drive operational and safety excellence within the business. The people are great; all want to succeed. This makes it worthwhile.”
