As one of five females in her family who work in mining, one would be forgiven for thinking it is non-stop shop talk at Sandy’s family get togethers.
For Sandy, who joined Bis in January 2020 and is based at our Moranbah North site, her role as Safety and Sustainability Advisor sees her deliver a mix of strategic and tactical responsibilities on a daily basis, and the diversity of the role ensures each of her 12-hour shift is unique.
She provides crucial safety and sustainability technical and leadership support across the Moranbah North operation, and she does so with a welcoming and inclusive approach.
‘A large part of my role involves empowerment. It’s very important to me that we continually coach and mentor line management and operational staff to successfully deliver our agreed work, health and safety and environment strategic and tactical goal and targets’.
A typical day for Sandy is always multifaceted. She attends customer contractor and operational meetings and provides safety and sustainability technical advice in relation to the coal mining Act, other regulations and specific customer site requirements. She supports the site specific Zero Harm plans including critical risk management, helps line supervisors conduct near miss investigations, works closely with the WCIS team to effectively access and manage employee injuries, facilitates ICAM investigations, conducts risk assessments, inspections, audits, analyses safety trends and statistics and ensures compliance to ISO standards. She also provides general HSE governance. It’s a wide remit, but that’s the thing she thrives on.
Outside of work, Sandy retreats to her rural farm near Mackay. “I check fence lines on horseback and tend to our bees and fruit trees. I’m working towards the farm being wholly self-sufficient.’
What does she consider the best part of working at Bis? ‘Every team member – both at Moranbah North and within the Safety and Sustainability Team nationally – has a strong motivation to improve. We want the best outcome for each other and a desire to live our motto with delivering everyday even under extreme conditions. We always seem to find a way to achieve this’.
With a Masters degree in Occupational and Environmental Safety and Health and having spent the majority of her career in heavy industry and mining both in Australia and the United States, Sandy is an incredible asset to the Bis team.
