Bis innovations proudly represented at Australian Mining Prospect Awards

Bis was amongst a stellar line up of companies acknowledged for their focus on innovation and community integration initiatives in two key categories at the 2019 Australian Mining Prospect Awards.

The highly successful Bis Girls Rocking Resources initiative a finalist for the Community Interaction Award. In addition, the revolutionary new Bis mining haul truck, Rexx, was also a finalist in the fiercely contested Innovative Mining Solution category.

Bis CEO Brad Rogers said that being a finalist in these categories highlights the company’s commitment to delivering positive customer, social, environmental and economic outcomes.

“At Bis we are constantly searching for better ways to create sustainable, long lasting solutions for customers across the resources sector, whether that be through customer focused innovative product developments, or by creating and amplifying sustainable opportunities for people working in our industry.

‘Rexx for example, is the result of us identifying a need for a safe, efficient and flexible off road haulage solution for our customers, all while being at the forefront of mining technology innovation.”

Bis recognised a problem in double handling product when it was being moved from pit to processing. The solution was a 20-wheeled, long range, out-of-pit hauler that would combine the distance capacity of a traditional off road haulage solution with the ability to go out of pit.

Mr Rogers praised Bis’ in-house engineering team who designed and constructed Rexx in Perth, Western Australia. “What our engineering team has delivered in Rexx is exceptional. They can be proud to say they have been instrumental in creating a real game changer for mine haulage.”

The Girls Rocking Resources is a Bis initiative for young women aimed at showcasing the broad range of roles and career opportunities available in the resources sector.

The event-based initiative, where Bis partners with customers in local regions to deliver the event, involves secondary school age females visiting Bis sites and participating in tours, hands-on STEM activities, panel discussions and keynote speeches from young women working in the industry.

Already, Girls Rocking Resources events have been hosted in Gunnedah with Whitehaven Coal and in Kalgoorlie-Boulder with Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines. More events are being planned for 2020.

Commenting on the initiative, Karen Bradshaw, Director of People and Culture said Bis developed the concept as part of the company’s aims to encourage greater diversity and inclusion, which includes promotion of careers in the resources industry to young girls in our communities.

‘We view working with our customers to grow the next generation of mining professionals as equally as important as fostering our current workforce, so the Girls Rocking Resources initiative has been incredibly successful in creating an opportunity for school aged girls to experience the industry and explore its vast career opportunities.

“And the evidence is clear. When we look at our current statistics, our female participation is hovering around 15%, which is a 5% increase in just three years. This is a solid increase, but it is only with industry wide efforts and initiatives like Girls Rocking Resources, that we will continue the upwards trajectory towards a truly diversified workforce.”

Mr Rogers extended his congratulations to all fellow shortlisted and winning companies, saying the depth of the categories speaks volumes about the entrepreneurship, collaboration and innovation currently existing in the sector.

“The strength and diversity of the submissions was outstanding, and is testament to the talent we have in the Australian Mining and Resources sector. The world is watching what we do and it’s for good reason.

“For Bis, this is very encouraging as we proudly take our Australian designed and made products into exploring new international markets and opportunities.”
